Edukasi Moderasi Beragama Berbasis STEAM Melalui Buku Cerita Bergambar bagi Anak Diaspora Indonesia di Jepang

Abstract

Indonesian Muslim diaspora families in Japan face complex cultural challenges in negotiating their religious identity within a secular, multicultural society. This international Community Service (PKM) activity aims to instill the values of religious moderation in early-childhood and school-age diaspora children through a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics) approach packaged in an illustrated storybook. The activity was carried out on 9 and 11 September 2024 in two settings with distinct characteristics: the MWCINU Kyoto Shiga - PCI Muslimat NU Japan community and the Indonesian Republic School of Tokyo (SRIT). The methods applied included a family-centered approach, storytelling, STEAM-based interactive dialogue, and the distribution of an illustrated storybook containing religious-moderation content. The results show that the storybook is highly adaptive across contexts. In Kyoto, it functioned as an epistemological bridge that helped parents integrate the science education their children receive at Japanese schools with religious values taught at home. At SRIT Tokyo, the approach refreshed students' understanding of tolerance and national commitment through a rational-scientific lens. Overall, the activity proved effective as a religious-education instrument for a minority Muslim community and represents a concrete realization of STAI Taruna Surabaya's vision as a Globally Oriented Campus responsive to strategic issues facing the global ummah.
